He was a Master Builder and Architect in Dublin. A deed of 1814 connects him with the Tunbridges of Ballinrobe.

He is assumed to be the son of Peter Tunbridge of Ballinrobe on the basis of his likely year of birth, but no documentary evidence has been found to date.

Biography

Madeline HUGHES was born before 1783. She married Martin TUNBRIDGE, son of Peter TUNBRIDGE. She died on 10 November 1835 in Haulbowline Island, Co. CorkG.

According to Burke's 1868 edition of "A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland", Madeline Hughes was the daughter of James Hughes of Ballinrobe, co. Mayo, b. 1740, who in May 1774 married Letitia Ireland, daughter of the Very Rev. William Ireland, a distinguished Divine, Rector of Cong, co. Mayo, warden of Galway, and J.P. for several counties, and great-great-granddaughter of William Ireland by the Hon. Margaret De Courcy his wife youngest surviving daughter of John De Courcy, 21st Lord Kingsale, and sole surviving sister and heiress of Almericus, 22nd Lord Kingsale. James Hughes died on 9 Nov 1786, aged 46.

Martin and Madeline Tunbridge's son Thomas was described as their 5th son in his death announcement, so there were likely to have been two more sons born before 1820 than are listed here.

Her death was announced in the 12 November 1835 edition of the Cork Constitution, transcribed as follows:
"On the evening of the 10th instant, at the residence of her son, Haulbowline Island, Madeline, relict of the late Martin Tunbridge, Esq., of the city of Dublin. In her decease, her numerous family have been deprived of a most tender and affectionate parent and her relatives and acquaintance of an amiable and kind-hearted friend."
