     John Courtney FRENCH was born circa 1883; aged 53 at the time of his marriage in 1936.¹ He married Eveleyn Olive SMYTH, daughter of George SMYTH, on 8 October 1936 in Register Office, Bristol, England; Witnesses: H.G. Hunt and R.Richards.¹
     
John Courtney French was a Policeman in the Royal Irish Constabulary. He was enumerated in his mother’s household at Killala, Co. Mayo in the 1901 census. He enlisted in the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1902, aged 18. In 1908 he received a first-class favourable record and £5 for brave conduct displayed when attacked while on patrol with Sergeant Oates. He was recorded in the 1911 census as a Constable in the RIC Barracks, Dunlo Street, Ballinasloe; the barracks housed 15 constables, an acting sergeant, two sergeants and a head constable at the time. He was recorded on the official list of favourable records (Good Police Duty, Class III) in 1918. He emigrated to England and was living 38 Upper Cranbrook Road, Bristol, England at the time of his marriage in 1936.
John Courtney French may have been given his middle name after Courtney Tunbridge who was a witness at his father Robert French’s wedding, and who was his great uncle.^2,3,4,5,1

     Eliza FRENCH was born on 7 March 1867 in Headford, Co. Galway, Ireland.¹ She married Charles Henry LAIDLEY on 8 June 1887 in Sellerna Parish Church, Co. Galway; witnesses Robert French and Robert Rogers.² She died after 1930.
     
Eliza French was recorded in the 1901 Ireland census at Roundstone, Co. Galway and described as Elizabeth Laidley, aged 33, housekeeper, born in Co. Galway. She was enumerated with her 8 children Frederick (aged 13), Christina (12), Amanda (10), Robert (8), Edna (5), Geraldine (4), Irene (2) and Violet (10 months). Her husband Charles was the enumerator, in his capacity as the local Constable, and he was recorded separately on the Barracks Return.
She was recorded in the 1911 Ireland census at Oughterard, Co. Galway, and described as Elizabeth Laidley, aged 33, married for 23 years and having 11 children, all still living. She was enumerated with her husband Charles H. (aged 50), and children Robert S. (18), Edna A. (16), Geraldine M. (14), Irene A. (12), Violet R. (10), Louis H. (7), George A. (5) and John J.F. (2).
She emigrated to America in 1915 with her husband Charles and children Violet, Louis, George and John. They sailed from Liverpool on the S.S. New York, leaving on 7th August and arriving at New York on the 16th. In 1920 she was living at Ainslee Street, Philadelphia with her husband Charles and sons Louis, George and John. In 1930 she was recorded in Philadelphia with her husband Charles, son Louis, daughter Geraldine Henry (widow), grandchildren Katherine Henry (12) and Joseph Henry (9), son in law Thomas Moody (43), daughter Edna Moody, and grandchildren Eileen Moody (10) and Thomas Moody (8).^3,4,5,6,7

     Anne FRENCH was born on 20 May 1873 in Moyrus, Co. Galway, Ireland.¹ She married Joseph Thomas HIGGINS, son of Frederick HIGGINS and Frances Anne MOONEY, on 8 September 1895 in Chistchurch, Clifden, Co. Galway; witnesses Robert French, William Elliott Higgins.² She died in 1957.³
     
Anne French was the mother of the Irish poet F.R. Higgins. She was described as a Dressmaker on her marriage certificate of 1895.
She was enumerated in the 1911 Ireland census at 20 Clarence Street North, Dublin, and was recorded as having had 6 children by that date, with 5 still living.⁴

     Robert FRENCH was born on 30 July 1868 in Moyrus, Co. Galway, Ireland; mother's maiden name given as McGee, father's profession as Constable R.I. Constabulary.
     
Robert French enlisted in the Royal Irish Constabulary on 19 Oct 1886 aged 17. He served in Co. Wexford from 3 Jul 1887 and in Co. Mayo from 5 Jun 1896. He was stationed at Killala in 1901 and at Claremorris in 1911. He was discharged on 6 Feb 1920 with a gratuity of £78.¹

     Joseph Thomas HIGGINS was born circa March 1862 in Co. Meath, Ireland. He married Anne FRENCH, daughter of Robert FRENCH and Eliza McKEE, on 8 September 1895 in Chistchurch, Clifden, Co. Galway; witnesses Robert French, William Elliott Higgins.¹ He died on 27 July 1930 in 81 Brian Avenue, Croydon Park, Fairview, Dublin.² He was buried on 29 July 1930 in Laracor churchyard, Trim, Co. Meath.²
     
Joseph Higgins was a Constable in the Royal Irish Constabulary, and lived at Higginsbrook, County Meath. He enlisted on 16 Aug 1882, aged 20 years and 5 months. He served in Cork E.R., Dublin, Clare, Galway W.R. and Mayo and was pensioned on 17 Aug 1909.
He was enumerated in the 1901 census as head of household at Brookville Avenue, Swineford, Co. Mayo, and described as a Constable, Royal Irish Constabulary, aged 38, born in Co. Meath. He was enumerated with his wife Annie, son Frederick R. and daughters Frances Anne and Caroline Isabella.
He was recorded in the 1911 Ireland census as the head of household at 20 Clarence Street North, Dublin and described as an R.I.C. Pensioner. He was enumerated with his wife Annie, sons Frederick R., Joseph A. and William M., and daughters Frances Anne and Emily D.E.^3,4,5,6

     Frederick Robert HIGGINS was born on 24 April 1896 in Foxford, Co. Mayo, Ireland. He married Beatrice May MOORE, daughter of James MOORE and Elizabeth McDOWELL, on 3 August 1921.² He died on 8 January 1941 in Jervis Street Hospital, Dublin, Ireland, at age 44.³ He was buried in Laracor Church, Co. Meath, Ireland.
     
Frederick Robert Higgins was a Poet, Playwright and managing director of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. He was the eldest of nine children. He published four volumes of poetry: Island Blood (1925); The Dark Breed (1927); Arable Holdings (1933); and The Gap of Brightness (1940). One of his better known poems, from the last volume, is 'Father and Son'. Following his death, the Irish Times published several notices, obituaries and tributes.^2,3

     Beatrice May MOORE was born circa 1897 in Dublin City.² She married Frederick Robert HIGGINS, son of Joseph Thomas HIGGINS and Anne FRENCH, on 3 August 1921.³
     
Beatrice May Moore was the only daughter of James Moore and Elizabeth McDowell. She was a well-known harpist.

Eveleyn Olive Smyth was recorded in the 1911 census of Ireland in her father’s household at Church Street, Tarbert, Co Kerry. She was living at 38 Upper Cranbrook Road, Bristol, England at the time of her marriage in 1936.^2,1

     Thomas MAHONEY was born on 4 June 1860 in probably Allenwood, Co. Kildare, Ireland.^1,2 He died on 13 March 1946 in Upper Sunville, Co. Limerick, Ireland, at age 85.³ He was buried on 15 March 1946 in Kilfinane, Co. Limerick, Ireland.⁴

     Margaret MAHONEY was born on 28 February 1864 in Allenwood, Co. Kildare, Ireland. She married Francis NAYLOR, son of Joseph NAYLOR and Agnes SHINE, on 13 August 1890 in St. Michaels Church, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. She died on 27 May 1906 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, at age 42.¹
     
Margaret Mahoney was living in Kilfinane in February 1882, when she was the informant of the birth of her niece Margaret Winters. She emigrated in 1885 to Australia. She was living in Upper Sunville in January 1885, when she was the informant of the birth of her niece Georgina Jane Winters.

She emigrated in 1885; she was 21 years old when she departed from Plymouth and arrived in Sydney on board 'Belgic II' on 12th September 1885 as an assisted immigrant. She apparently travelled alone as there are no other Mahony relatives on board.

Note: 'Belgic II' was built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast and launched on 3rd January 1885. It was owned by the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company (more commonly known as the White Star Line). 'Belgic II' was a steamer of 4212 gross tons, a length of 420ft 4in, a beam of 42ft 5in and a service speed of 14 knots with one funnel and four masts. She was on the Pacific service from 1885 to 1898.^2,3,4

He was christened on 2 July 1826 in Stradbally Parish, Queen’s County.¹ He married Maria MEREDITH, daughter of Samuel MEREDITH and Elizabeth WILKINSON, on 30 April 1856 in Stradbally Church, Co. Laois, Ireland. He married Jane HANDCOCK, daughter of Philip HANDCOCK, on 11 June 1872 in Athy, Co. Kildare, Ireland.² He died in 1916 in Co. Laois, Ireland.³ He was buried on 18 November 1916 in Stradbally Parish, Queen's Co., Ireland; aged 90, of Garrymaddock.⁴

He was described as Richard Bond, head of family, Church of Ireland, able to read & write, aged 75, a farmer, married, born in Queen's Co. He was enumerated with his wife Jane (aged 74), son John (aged 39) and son Thomas (aged 34). He was enumerated in the 1911 census at Garrymaddock, aged 85, with his son John (unmarried, aged 50), his son Thomas Henry (married, aged 48) and his daughter in law Frances Mary (aged 40).^5,6

     Esther MEREDITH was born on 22 June 1834. She was christened on 3 August 1834 in Maryborough Church, Co. Laois, Ireland. She married George MEREDITH, son of Samuel MEREDITH and Elizabeth WILKINSON, on 16 May 1872 in Mountrath, Co. Laois, Ireland. She died on 16 June 1909 in Mountbrook, Co. Laois, Ireland, at age 74; 16th June 1909 Mountbrook, Esther Merdith [sic], married, aged 76 years, wife of a farmer, general paralysis 5 days exhaustion, informant George Merdith widower Mountbrook present at death.¹

Dublin, Ireland; under the authority of a special licence granted by Joseph McKay. Married according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Witnesses Jonathan Luttrell and Emily Metcalfe.³ She died on 5 November 1910 in Ballylinan, Co. Laois, Ireland, at age 74.⁴

     Robert Samuel MEREDITH was born on 21 March 1875.¹ He married Adelaide DEVERELL, daughter of Robert DEVERELL and Charlotte WILKINSON, on 30 June 1909 in Tralee, Co. Kerry; the witnesses were William H. Meredith and William Deverell.² He died on 3 July 1966 at age 91.³ He was buried on 5 July 1966 in Dysart Enos Cemetery, Stradbally, County Laois.³

The house was listed as no. 1 and described as 2nd class, having walls of stone, brick or concrete, a roof of slate, iron or tiles, with 5 or 6 rooms, and 4 windows in front. 6 rooms were occupied. It had 11 outbuildings,comprising a stable, coach house, 3 cow houses, a calf house, a dairy, a piggery, a fowl house, a barn and a shed.

He was living at Corbally, Ballylinan in the year of his death, aged 91.^4,5

     Adelaide DEVERELL was born circa 1873. She married Robert Samuel MEREDITH, son of Henry MEREDITH and Elizabeth METCALFE, on 30 June 1909 in Tralee, Co. Kerry; the witnesses were William H. Meredith and William Deverell.¹ She died on 26 June 1948 in Annagharvey, Tullamore.^2,3 She was buried on 28 June 1948 in Holy Trinity Churchyard, Rock of Dunamaise, County Laois, Ireland.

Laois, Ireland, in which she was described as Adelaide Meredith, wife, Church of Ireland, can read & write, aged 37, born in Queen's Co, married for 1 year, with 1 child born alive and still living.⁴

     Charlotte WILKINSON was born in 1833.² She married Robert DEVERELL, son of William DEVERELL and Mary (-), in 1871 in Mountmellick Registration District.³ She died on 7 January 1879.^4,5 She was buried in Dunamaise, Co. Laois.

     Robert Henry MEREDITH was born circa November 1910; estimated from 1911 census that gives his age at the census date of 2 April as 4 months. He married Anne Helenor NAPIER on 23 April 1941 in Cloneyhurke Church, Portarlington.¹ He died in August 2002.²

Laois, Ireland, at age 75.²

     Richard Christopher KINGSTON married Frances Anne HIGGINS, daughter of Joseph Thomas HIGGINS and Anne FRENCH, in 1926 in Dublin North Registration District.¹ He died on 10 December 1974 in Isle Of Man.²
