     Richard MEREDITH was born circa 1550.1 He married Sarah BATHO before 1584.3 He died on 3 August 1597.3,4 He was buried on 7 August 1597 at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland.5
     
Richard Meredith entered Oxford University in 1568. He graduated BA on 4 March 1573 at Jesus College, Oxford, England, and graduated MA on 1 June 1575 from the same college.

He appears to have entered the Church as a member of St. David's Cathedral Clergy the same year he entered Oxford University, as he is recorded as a Prebendary at Clydey, Pembrokeshire, Wales in 1568. Perhaps it is no coincidence that the Bishop of St. David's was Richard Davies, his father's 1st cousin. The Bishop may have played a part in Richard Meredith's upbringing following his father's death in 1557, when Richard was about 7 years old. Subsequently, he is recorded as having had the following appointments:
     ~ Rector (with cure of souls) in 1573 at Rhoscrowther, Pembrokeshire, Wales.
     ~ Prebendary in 1574 at Brecon, Powys, Wales.
     ~ Prebendary in 1575 at Lledrod, Brecon, Powys, Wales.
     ~ Prebendary, Brecon collegiate church and rector, Barton in Pembrokeshire in 1578.
     ~ Rector (with cure of souls) in 1578 at Burton, Pembrokeshire, Wales.
     ~ Vicar in 1579 at Llanafan Fawr, Brecknockshire, Wales.
     ~ Prebendary in 1580 at Carrog, Denbighshire, Wales.
     ~ Sinecure Rector in 1580 at Angle, Pembrokeshire, Wales.
     ~ Cursal Prebendary in 1580 at St. David's, Pembrokeshire, Wales.

He was appointed Chaplain to the lord deputy of Ireland, Sir John Perrot in 1584, and moved to Dublin where he was appointed Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in June 1584 that year. He was described in July 1588 as being noted for 'diligent preaching' and keeping 'a good house to the relief of many people which likeness was not done this 30 years by his predecessors' in July 1588. He was appointed Bishop of Leighlin in April 1589. He appeared before the Star Chamber in May 1592 and was fined £2000. He was described as being in poor health and 'not like to live' in 1593. He appeared before Dublin court of castle chamber in January 1593/94, and was fined £20 with a sentence of eight days in prison. He left a will dated 28 July 1597; £100 to Dublin corporation; allowance to poor; £800 due to estate from Archbishop Loftus and sons & bequeathed to his daughters provided they remained chaste until marriage, estate in Pembrokeshire to youngest son. He died on 3 August 1597. He was buried on 7 August 1597 at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland. His will was proven in 1606 at St Asaph's Consistory Court.

     Sarah BATHO was born before 1567. She married Richard MEREDITH, son of Robert MEREDITH and Margaret FERCH WILLIAM AP JOHN, before 1584.1 She married Adam LOFTUS, son of Robert LOFTUS, in 1597. She died on 1 August 1650 at Middleham, Yorkshire, England.2
     
Sarath Batho’s brother became the steward to her first husband Richard Meredith. William Weston accused Sarah's 2nd husband Adam Loftus of having taken bribes during the years 1620 to 1623, when Weston said he gave Lady Loftus, among other things, “one suit of hangings of the value of £160, one dozen of silver plates with his lordship's arms thereupon [and] 32 ells [of] Polonie rich taffetie”.3

     Adam LOFTUS was born circa 1568. He married Sarah BATHO in 1597. He died in 1643 at Middleham, Yorkshire, England. He was buried at Coverham church, Yorkshire, England.
     
Sir Adam Loftus was 1st Viscount Loftus of Ely, Lord Chancellor of Ireland, nephew to Adam Loftus Archbishop of Dublin. He lost considerable property, in excess of D10,000 in value, as a result of the Irish rising of October 1641. Soon afterwards hemoved to Yorkshire, where he died at Middleham early in 1643. He was buried later that year at Coverham church. His widow died seven years later.

     Thomas MEREDITH was born after 1576.4 He married Letitia FORTESCUE, daughter of Faithful FORTESCUE and Anne MOORE. He died circa 1677.
     
Sir Thomas Meredith was knighted in Ireland on 15 Jul 1630 by Viscount Loftus and the Earl of Cork, Lords Justices of Ireland. He was admitted to Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland as a Fellow Commoner in 1609, and to Lincoln's Inn on 14 Jul 1628. He was a Member of Parliament for Old Leighlin, Co. Carlow, Ireland in 1634. On 5 May 1645 he presented a petition to Irish House of Commons.
He owned property at Dromormona, Co. Tipperary, Ireland in 1634 and in Co. Mayo, Ireland before 1659. In 1635 Dean Benjamine Culme demised to Sir Thomas Meredith, Chancellor of the Exchequer [sic], for £50 per annum, the Lordship and Manor of Kilberry, Bert, Clony, Shrowlan, Kilcolman, Oldcourt, Tullaghgory, Preswellstown, Shanrahin, Tyrrelstown, Clonwanwyer, and Russelstown.
He was recorded as living at Shop St and Deere St Ward, Drogheda, Co. Louth, Ireland in 1664, and at Mooretown, Co. Kildare, Ireland, in 1634.
His will was dated 28 Dec 1676.

An incident in March 1643 is described by Clodagh Tait in 'Death, Burial and Commemoration in Ireland, 1550-1650' in which: ‘Sir Thomas Meredith smashed the tomb of a Mr. Eustace at Castlemartin in County Kildare. His ensign, Edward Roe,later deposed that he did this because ?Mr. Eustace of Castlemartin had burnt the house of Sir Robert Meredith, who was brother to the said Sir Thomas and sayeth that the said Sir Thomas sayeth further that that he knows this [thedestruction of the tomb] would vex the said Mr. Eustace more than anything else he could do unto him'. Meredith knew that Eustace would be vexed not only at the destruction of his property, but also at the insult to his family and tothe position that they held in society.      Anne MEREDITH was born before 1590. She married William COLLEY, son of George COLLEY. She died on 18 September 1608.2 She was buried at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland.
     
Her Funeral Entry states:
'Anne dr. of Rich: Meredith sometime xx Bi: of Leighlin & wi: to Wm. eldest sonne of Sr. Geo: Colley of Edendery Knight, deceased in childe-bedde of her first childe born 18th[?] Septemb: 1603 . cc bur: in St. Patricks Dublin in herfathers tombe: the child (named William) alsoe died.'

Sir Charles Meredith was knighted in Ireland on 4 Sep 1664. He was a Member of Parliament for Old Leighlin from 1661 to 1666, and for Gowran in 1692 and 1693. He was Chancellor of the Exchequer (Ireland) between 1674 and 1687, and again from 1693 to 1695. He was Revenue Commissioner from 1675 to 1677. He was appointed Privy Counsellor in Aug 1671. He was living in Hangman's Lane, St. Michan's Parish, Dublin, Ireland in 1659 and later lived at Greenhills, Co. Kildare, Ireland. He obtained 3,746 acres from the Commissioners of the Act of Settlement. In 19 Apr 1697 he was granted the custodiam of Oxmantown, Ireland for 31 years, the chapel being made available for worship by French Protestants. In his will dated 25 Mar 1694/95 (probated 18 Nov 1700) he was described as living in St Anne Parish, Soho, Middlesex, England.1,2,3,4

As widow of Charles Coote, Alice Meredith she was attainted by James II's Parliament in 1689, and had her jointure of £950 a year sequestrated. On the intercession of Queen Mary in 1691 she was granted custody of an estate in the hands of the Crown until her own should be restored to her. She left a will in 1689.1

     Richard MEREDITH was born between 1657 and 1667.2,3,4 He married Sarah PAUL, daughter of Jeffery PAUL and Deborah VINCENT, on 1 January 1702/3.5,6 He died in 1743. He was buried on 8 October 1743.
     
Richard Meredith was Member of Parliament for Athy from 1703 to 1713, and Sheriff of County Kildare in 1726. He entered Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland on 5 Jun 1685 and Middle Temple on 1 Feb 1687/88.
On 17 Feb 1689 he made an allegation at St Giles in the Fields, Middlesex, for a marriage licence between Robert, Lord Baron of Kingston in Ireland, bachelor aged about 30, and Margaret Harbord of St. Martin's in the Fields, Middlesex, spinster agedabout 22, with her father's consent. He was described as a Gentleman of that parish.
On 19 Feb 1689 he was party to the deed of settlement in respect of the proposed marriage of Robert Lord Kingston to Margaret Harbord, daughter of William Harbord of Grafton Park.
Note: various pedigrees in circulation assert that Richard was the son of the Sir William Meredith Bart who married Mary King, and that Richard is therefore the 2nd Bart. and that the succession continued down to Edward Newenham Meredith as 9th Bart. However it is clear from several sources that Sir William Meredith died childless and the baronetcy became extinct then. In his will Sir William makes his wife Mary his sole heiress and executrix. No contemporary sources refer to Richard or to his descendants as having succeeded to to Baronetcy.7,8,9,10

     Charles COOTE was born circa 1622. He was born circa 1630.1 He married Alice MEREDITH, daughter of Robert MEREDITH and Anne USSHER, in 1653. He died on 30 August 1672. He was buried at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland.
     
Charles Coote was the 2nd Earl of Mountrath.

A Coote descendant has published the following details:
'He was born about 1622. In 1649 he was paid £297.2s. by the state for debts incurred 'during his long sickness in England', and for his future maintenance.
In 1653 he married Alice Meredith, daughter of Sir Robert Meredith of Greenhills, Kildare, who was Chancellor of the Exchequer for Ireland. They had four children, Charles, Robert, Mary and Anne. Robert and Mary died young, and Annemarried Murrough Boyle, Viscount Blesington.
In 1654 he was MP for Galway and Mayo.
In 1660 he was knighted, possibly under the provision in the Patent of Baronetcy for the eldest son of the baronet to be knighted. However, from 1660-1661, till he inherited the Earldom on his father's death, he was known by the courtesytitle of Viscount Castlecoote.
In 1660, he was appointed Collector and Receiver General of the Composition Money for Connaught and Thomond, with his brother Richard, for life, and in 1661 was appointed a Captain of Foot, and Provost Marshal of Connaught which seems tohave been almost a hereditary office held previously by his father and grandfather!
In 1661 he was MP for Roscommon.
In 1662 he was granted a general pardon for all offences committed during the Rebellion, and in 1664 was appointed Custos Rotulorum for Queens County.
In 1666 he was persuaded by Charles II to return Lord Clanricarde's Galway house, Tyrellan, plus 4000 acres, which his father had bought (or expropriated), to the widow, in exchange for Dublin property of the same worth.
He died in 1672 'of a great consumption and convulsion fits' and was buried next to his father in the choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin.
One of their houses was Rush Hall, near Mountrath, which had come into the family through the marriage of the 1st Earl to Mary Ruish. In 1947 two turf-cutters working in the adjacent bog dug up two large (22') pewter plates (chargers).On being examined by the National Museum in Dublin, one of them was found to bear a coat-of-arms, Coote quartering Ruish, impaling Meredith, beneath an earl's coronet. These are the arms of Charles Coote (2nd Earl of Mountrath). As thissize of plates were often marriage chargers, it is possible that they commemorate the marriage in 1653 of Charles Coote and Alice Meredith, though he did not inherit the earldom until 1661. The chargers were accordingly claimed back asfamily items, and were returned to Sir John Coote, 14th Bart. They were possibly hidden in the bog for safe keeping on some occasion of civil unrest, a not uncommon procedure.
Sir Maurice Eustace (Chancellor) in a letter to the Duke of Ormonde in 1661 says that 'he was of much better nature than his father, and had manifested much affection to the poor natives and was of a very sweet disposition, and made ofmuch better mould than his nearer relations'.
In his will, he says rather charmingly, of his children, 'because many mischiefs have arisen to youth when they are left to themselves, which, I bless God for, I have no reason to fear to my children, yet I desire and charge my dear sonand daughter to be advised by their mother in all their concerns and in disposing of themselves, and I do appoint my dearly beloved wife and her brother Sir Charles Meredith to be their guardians' until they reach the age of 21.2'

     Robert MEREDITH was born between 1517 and 1523 at Llanfair Talhaearn, Denbighshire, Wales; now in the Welsh Unitary Authority of Conwy and called Llanfair Talhaiarn on the Ordnance Survey maps.1 He married Margaret FERCH WILLIAM AP JOHN, daughter of William ap JOHN OF and Elsbeth FERCH HARRY HEN CONWY. He died in 1557 at London, England.2
     
The story that we can piece together from Robert Meredith's Will, Bartrum’s Welsh Genealogies, and from correspondence with the Clothworkers’ Company is as follows:

Robert Meredith was born between 1517 and 1523, one of at least two sons of Maredudd ap Gronwy ap Deio and his wife Elsbeth ferch John ap Edward. His place of birth was Llanfair Talhaearn in Denbighshire (now in the Welsh Unitary Authority of Conwy and called Llanfair Talhaiarn on the Ordnance Survey maps). In about 1537-8 he became apprenticed as a clothworker to a Davy Price in London. The account books of the Clothworkers’ Company show that he completed his apprenticeship between August 1544 and July 1545 and was “made Free”. He would have been at least 21 years old then, but no older than 27: the apprenticeship normally started at age 14-20 and lasted 7 years.

It is unlikely that he would have been married before being made Free, and so his probable date of marriage to Marged ferch William ap John was between 1545 and 1548, taking into account the estimated date of birth of 1550 of his 2nd son Richard, the future Bishop of Leighlin. Robert married into an interesting family, one of his brothers-in-law being George Smith the Chancellor of St. Asaph (i.e. private secretary to the Bishop of St. Asaph). The other brother-in-law was a colourful character called Roger Smyth, a Roman Catholic priest and Welsh translator who fled to the Continent ca. 1573 and spent much of his time there. Roger Smyth was described as “a man of uncommon opinions who disliked both the Jesuits and the English, and desired to see a republic, together with freedom of conscience, instituted in Wales and England”. Robert Meredith’s two sons John and Richard seemed to have been born ca. 1550.

Sometime between 1544 and 1551 Robert was the plaintiff in a case, considered by the Court of Chancery, against a first cousin Griffith ap Howell regarding lands in Llanfair inherited from their grandfather Gronwy ap Deio. The details of the case show that his uncle, Howell ap Gronwy ap Deio, was an elder brother of his father Maredudd.

Robert Meredith’s Will is dated 24th January 1556/7 and describes him as Citizen and Clothworker of London living in the parish of Aldermary. The Will names his wife as Margaret, mother as Elizabeth (and therefore still living in 1557), and two sons John and Richard. He leaves his property in Denbighshire to his mother Elizabeth for the rest of her life, and thereafter to his son John and his heirs, and for lack of heirs to his son Richard and his heirs (so we can assume that John was the elder son). The Will also names a brother David (but note that the term can be used loosely in Wills of the time). The Will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 29 March 1557, so Robert must have died sometime between 24 January and 29 March of that year.

It is possible that his widow is the “Margarett Meridith” that the IGI shows as having married a “Reighnold Sainct” (probably Reginald Saint) on 4 Feb 1559 at Saint Thomas the Apostle, London (which is a parish near to Aldermary).2,3 (Bartrum ref: Lln.E. 4(A)).1

     Arthur MEREDITH was born in 1639. He was baptized on 16 March 1638/39 at St Michan's Church, Dublin, Ireland.2 He married Dorothea BINGLEY in 1661.3 He died on 4 May 1732. He was buried on 6 May 1732 at St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland.4
     
Arthur Meredith was:
~ High Sheriff of Co. Meath, Ireland from 1679 to 1680 and again in 1682;
~ a General in the army;
~ MP for Navan, Ireland from 1692 to 1727.
He held 382 acres of Dollardstown, barony of Duleek, and the 200 of Cristown, barony of Kells, from the Crown in 1683. He purchased 1070 acres in Co. Meath from the Commissioners for Sale of Forfeited Estates ca 1702/3.5
